Case Study
Slieve Bloom Organics
Real World Impact
"I wasn't the problem. My system was."
"There have been days when the packing and delivery were moving along very smoothly and I was able to sow seeds or plant while it was being managed efficiently by staff."
Alison Chambers, Slieve Bloom Organics
A farmer. Sowing seeds. While the business runs itself.
That's the whole story in one sentence. Here's how it happened.
Farmers are not afraid of work.
That's not the problem. It never was.
The problem is when you've given everything — the early mornings, the late nights, the weekends — and the business still needs more. Not more effort. More of you. More hours you don't have. More admin that never ends.
That's the moment Alison Chambers hit in the winter of 2025. Slieve Bloom Organics was growing. Customers loved her produce. But somewhere between the growing, the selling, the delivering, and the invoicing, she ran out of road.
"One thing that took a lot of my time was taking in orders, setting price lists, updating them and remembering to send those emails with fresh availability lists four evenings per week by a certain time. It seemed like any time my routine got knocked off, I managed to forget to send the emails on time, thus losing sales for the following day."
She'd already tried. Properly tried.
Three different platforms before arriving here. She gave them all a fair hearing.
None of them could do what she needed — produce sold by weight and by unit, wholesale customers on account, online orders feeding the same stock as delivery runs, subscription boxes every week, a driver with a route on his phone.
Every platform could do some of it. None could do all of it. And the bits they couldn't do she still had to do herself. Manually. Every week.
"I had issues with sales details not syncing properly with my accounting software and issues around not being able to sell by weight. The platforms were rigid and not adjustable to our needs and in some cases customer support was non-existent."
"When the pressure is on and the choice is between watering dry plants or entering customer payments, the bookwork gets left behind. Customers would ask me what they owed and I had no idea. This allowed some customers to fall well behind on payments — and they were not happy about that, nor was it fair to them."
She didn't take a leap of faith. She took a calculated step.
Alastair Wallace of The Business Mechanic had already been working with Slieve Bloom Organics since August 2025. When he said "we can build you something that works exactly the way you work", Alison had every reason to believe him.
That's not a sales pitch. That's a track record.
The Core of Everything
One inventory. Every channel. In real time.
Online shop, market stall, farm shop, wholesale accounts, subscription boxes — all running off the same stock. When a sale happens anywhere, the inventory updates everywhere. Instantly.
A kilo of carrots can only be sold once. The system makes sure of it.
Built around her. Grew with her.
When Alison added the farmers market in March 2026, ShopSmart™ evolved with her. Market Mode keeps her market sales syncing with the same live stock as her online orders, delivery customers, and set boxes.
Now when the market is busy, Vija handles it. When the boxes go out, Sallah manages the packing. When an invoice needs chasing, the system has already sent it. When Alison wants to know how the week is going, she opens a dashboard — from wherever she is — and the answer is already there.
"A year ago I had to take orders from emails, phone calls and texts and handwrite a lot of them for the packer. It was often my unfinished harvesting that delayed the leaving of the van. Now I have pre-harvested most things and the packer takes in the vast majority of orders directly and I am only consulted for a few minor issues."
For the first time, a busy week is just a good week.
New orders are exciting. A new market location is an opportunity, not a logistical crisis. A new subscriber is revenue, not another manual entry in a spreadsheet.
"I was delighted that so many customers moved smoothly onto using the Stripe payment link and that has made life much easier for both myself and them."
This shift — from reacting to planning, from surviving to growing — is not a software feature. It's what happens when the right system finally sets you free to run your business instead of being run by it.
Alastair didn't arrive with a favourite tool and a plan to make everything fit it. He arrived with a methodology.
Think First. Tools Second. Transform.
A developer builds what you ask for. A systems thinker builds what you need — including the parts you didn't know to ask for.
You'll get there faster.
Organic farming is the future. The market is moving your way. And you'll figure out the business side too — most farmers do, eventually.
But if you want to skip the part where the business depends entirely on you being present for every single thing, call us.
Not because we'll dazzle you with software. Because we'll look at how your business actually works and build something around it. Something that grows when you grow. Something that runs when you're not watching.
"There is a point where doing everything yourself is actually quite efficient. However, in order to scale up there needs to be very robust systems in place. I would advise examining every aspect of the business and systemising every aspect until it all runs smoothly."

Alison didn't get a system.
She got her Mondays back.
That's what we do.
